Distretto Lazzaretto-una nuova comunità residenziale ecosostenibile, Bologna (BO, IT)

The new masterplan, including public functions and buildings, was designed based on a fundamental geometric grid. This approach allowed for the use of a “human-scale” module, facilitating the design of various areas while establishing a project priority scale that always places the user first. The design grid measures 280×280 cm and serves as the basic module for the planning of residences, green spaces, and public areas. This dimension was chosen following a study on possible space configurations, aiming to find a module that enables social interaction while respecting individual privacy. Each environment has been sized according to its intended function, user types, and overall mobility. The concept of “land-saving” was pivotal, favoring the verticality of buildings over horizontality, thus leaving more ground space for green areas. Finally, vehicular traffic was “hideen” by designing a central public square beneath which the roadway and parking spaces are located.
